This skincare advice for mature women helps promote healthy skin and can be followed by women (and men!) of all ages.

If you have started noticing changes to your skin, such as patches of sun damage or unwanted pigmentation (a skin condition called Melasma), isn’t it time you investigated further?

Mature Skin Needs Personalised Skincare Advice

Rectifying a skin problem at home or under professional supervision starts with an in-depth, 7 Point Skin Analysis. Because everyone’s skin is uniquely their own, the interaction of ingredients on a cellular level will vary.

When designing a CosMedix homecare plan, we take into account measurements of skin thickness, oiliness, and hydration. And, most importantly, we assess the health of the skin’s barrier function. Skin health and integrity have been directly linked to the feeling of tightness and sensitivity. This is why we make sure to ask specific questions that help identify whether your skin is normal, sensitive, or sensitised. Take a free skin health test.

CosMedix is an Advanced Treatment Line made with active ingredients more potent than those found in regular skincare products. This innovative technology is very gentle, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Key active ingredients are listed clearly, stating pH levels and percentages so that treatment is easily personalised and adjusted for each individual.

Your skin is constantly undergoing change, and many factors can impact skin renewal. This is why, once you’ve embarked on a programme, we recommend checking in with your certified practitioner every three months. Checking in can help ensure that you continue to achieve and maintain results from your personalised homecare plan.

Medico Beauty provide free advice by email and can also put you in touch with a certified practitioner in your area.

How to Repair Lines & Dry Skin

We follow a non-inflammatory approach, through a treatment method called Dermal Remodelling. The goal of treatment is to repair skin barrier function. This helps to ensure maximum protection against UV Radiation, which is the direct cause of 90% of skin ageing. As an added benefit, when skin barrier function is healthy, your skin won’t feel tight after cleansing!

We like to compare the Dermal Remodelling process to the steps involved in baking a delicious cake. The cake consists of many ingredients and layers, each one integral to the overall structure and flavour. Similarly, the health of the skin’s surface is closely related to the structure and function of the layers beneath. If you choose the best quality ingredients, even for the most basic elements, all you need are a few key ingredients to make something truly exceptional!

Why do we get Lines?

Successful restoration of healthy-looking skin relies on repairing damage to the skin’s outer layer (epidermis) and inner layer (dermis). The epidermis protects against external stressors, such as UV radiation, bacteria, and pollution. These stressors can cause irreversible damage and lead to premature ageing and skin disease. A healthy epidermis has a remarkable healing capacity and can renew itself at least every 28 days, under normal circumstances. Healthy skin does a much better job of replacing cells damaged by wounds or burns, while unhealthy skin scars more easily and takes longer to recover.

Facial lines and saggy skin originate in the dermis. These changes in the skin are connected to a lack of collagen and elastin. Collagen is the protein that makes up around 75% of skin, and is key to its structure and elasticity. Collagen fibre production declines with age: after the age of twenty we lose around 1.5% of total collagen every year. This connective fibre is also degraded (broken down) by sun damage and other stressors. In younger, healthy skin, specialised cells called fibroblasts help repair damage to collagen. This system becomes sluggish as we age, however, and as collagen production declines, this can significantly impact the skin’s appearance.

What is an Active Ingredient?

Active ingredients are those capable of penetrating the skin’s surface. They are recognised on a cellular level and communicate with all living skin cells. These active ingredients can, for example, stimulate an increase in cell renewal rate. When used topically, active ingredients can operate continuously to ensure the ongoing health of all skin cells throughout their lifetime.

Crucially, topical application of active ingredients can stimulate production of collagen and elastin. Key active ingredients include the building blocks of proteins (amino acids), vitamins, and the skin’s natural chemical signals called Growth Factors. Together, these factors have been shown to have a positive effect, boosting collagen and elastin production to promote healthy skin and a refreshed appearance.

The next step is to look at which active ingredients do the best job at addressing lines and preventing premature ageing.

1. Use a Treatment not a Skincare Line

CosMedix formulations feature active ingredients in a range and concentration that greatly surpasses regular skincare products. What’s more, these active complexes are formulated using a purification process called Chiral Correction. CosMedix have also developed unique delivery mechanisms to get these actives to where they are needed most.

CosMedix formulations work to improve function and structure at a cellular level, far beneath the skin’s surface. The use of Chiral Correction increases the effectiveness of active ingredients by four times over non-purified ingredients.

Below, we introduce some of the key active ingredients proven to help reverse the effects of premature ageing. If you are curious, learn more by visiting our online Directory of Skincare.

2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids – AHAs

AHAs instantly smooth the excess buildup of skin cell debris. Defy is a high strength, sophisticated formulation, made with three different types of natural acids including: L-lactic, L-tartaric, and L-malic acid. These acids are derived from natural sources that mirror specific receptor sites making the formulation completely Chirally Correct.

In 1996, Unilever Research published results from a study that compared the effects of L-lactic acid and non-purified DL-lactic acid. Most significantly, ceramide production increased by 48% after using L-lactic, compared to just 25% with DL-lactic acid.

CosMedix Defy cream is a complex of three different AHAs, including L-lactic acid. Daily use encourages your skin to increase production of natural moisture factors (NMF), which supports hydration for skin that looks and feels healthier and more youthful. Defy is very gentle and is safe to use in warmer climates.

Revolutionary Skincare – Made for You

All CosMedix formulations are free from glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an AHA that, while effective for cleaning pores, can create problems over time. This is because AHA has a very small molecular structure, which can lead to inflammatory skin problems and sensitisation.

In 1996, the United States Federal Drugs Agency (FDA) published a report on AHAs. In particular, the FDA raised concerns about the use of AHAs on fair skin and by individuals particularly susceptible to UV radiation. A key scientific study reported that skin exposed to sunlight after treatment with glycolic acid (10%) absorbed double the amount of UV radiation. Glycolic acid was also associated with a significant increase in skin redness (erythema). This online article provides more insight into the use of Glycolic Acid in skincare.

Is it safe to use AHAs in skincare?

The CosMedix AHA complex has a gentle, natural, action, and does not increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. CosMedix AHAs are Chirally Correct and able to target, and be recognised by, specific skin cell receptors. This AHA complex mirrors what is found naturally in the skin. CosMedix Defy cream is an excellent choice, whether you are already familiar with using AHAs, or are looking to begin an effective treatment. This innovative formula offers a high concentration of three different AHAs: L-lactic, L-malic, and L-tartaric acids. And, happily, it is safe for use by everyone, even those working outdoors.

Naturally, we recommend wearing a mineral-based sunscreen that is completely free from harmful chemicals. Specifically, we recommend a daily application of CosMedix Reflect SPF 30, or wearing a mineral makeup that contains an SPF 28. Our favourite organic mineral makeup is made in Australia and called Inika.

3. The Role of Hormones & Dry Skin

One root cause of dry skin is a decline in sebum (oil) production, which is common after menopause. Post-menopause, hormonal changes include a decline in dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is a master hormone. By age 70, women are estimated to have seventy-seven percent less DHEA than they did when they were twenty. This is compounded by a related decline in estrogen levels after menopause. Lower levels of estrogens affects skin thickness, wrinkle formation, and skin moisture. This is because estrogens can increase glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), such as Hyaluronic Acid, which help to maintain fluid balance and structural integrity. Estrogens also increase collagen production, which helps maintain epidermal thickness and allows skin to remain plump, hydrated, and wrinkle-free.

The truth is that no regular skincare routine can achieve the unique benefits that come from managing hormone health. It’s important to acknowledge these limitations and to take steps to modify your diet and lifestyle in order to help you maintain adequate DHEA production. This means getting enough exercise and including nutritious superfoods, such as those with pre-formed DHEA, like soya bean and wild yam. Eating foods that are a source of DHEA can encourage the body to produce more DHEA itself.

It’s also essential to eat enough healthy fats that contain Omega 3 & 9 fatty acids as these form the building blocks of all hormones. In general, fats that remain liquid at room temperature, such as olive, flax, and salmon oil, are healthy fats. Saturated fats typically remain solid at room temperature and are best avoided as these can cause a variety of health issues, including premature skin-ageing! For more advice on this vital topic, see the website called Foodmatters.com, which has verified, well researched articles, recipes, and eating plans.

Recommendations for Dry Skin

CosMedix takes a corrective approach to treating dry skin, so the problem is entirely eradicated. CosMedix was the first manufacturer to create a long-term skincare solution, and the hero product Phytoharmony has proven to be an absolute lifeline for women with dry skin. Phytoharmony is made with a natural source of DHEA, derived from a root vegetable called wild yam. This powerful plant is rich in phytoestrogens, which support natural levels of DHEA. Where Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) works internally to help restore hormonal balance, applying a natural form of estrogen to the skin can restore normal, healthy, oil production. The result is a resolution of symptoms associated with thin and dry skin. The ingredients in Phytoharmony are safe and do not enter the blood stream. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about the properties of this wonder product.

4. A Wrinkle Busting Ingredient That’s Proven Beyond Doubt

Countless studies have shown that using LG Retinex, a derivative of vitamin A, increases the rate of cellular renewal, speeding up production of new skin cells and pushing out older cells on the skin’s surface. Serum 16 literally rebuilds the skin’s outer and inner structure. It helps to repair skin damage caused by environmental exposure to free radicals and UV radiation, and boosts levels of  wrinkle-busting collagen and firming elastin.

Most importantly, Vitamin A derivatives such as LG Retinex offer a proven solution to damaged barrier function. Repairing the skin’s barrier is an effective way of addressing the root cause of many different skin conditions. This is why vitamin A offers a solution for a variety of symptoms, such as a feeling of tightness, dry skin caused by accelerated water loss and ageing, sensitive skin, Rosacea, Melasma and stubborn pigmentation issues.

The results have been proven to restore healthy skin for life.

After only 8 weeks, 90% of participants in a clinical study reported seeing reduced appearance of brown spots and discolouration.

5. Effective Cleansing for Dry & Mature Skin

One key piece of skincare advice for mature women is to pay attention to the ingredients in skincare products, including in cleansers. A significant number of high street brands include a detergent called Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS). SLS has been shown to cause skin irritation and to strip the skin’s natural oils that help maintain the skin barrier. Without effective barrier function, the skin lacks the protective layer that guards against many causes of premature ageing. Cleansers with an alkaline pH of more than 3.5 also cause dryness. This is one of the main reasons you should avoid cleaning your skin with soap.

Most skin damage can be avoided through daily conditioning. Using a cleanser made with L-lactic acid encourages the secretion of deeply hydrating ceramides and other natural moisture factors. For mature skin, we recommend beginning with a lower strength cleanser called Benefit Clean.  After three months, you may wish to switch to a more powerful 5% L-lactic acid cleanser called Purity Clean.
