Introducing Stephanie – Acne Treatment

Stephanie visited her local medico certified salon, Saks Hair & Beauty in Kings Hill located inside a David Lloyd Club, to get help with tackling a fairly severe case of adult Acne. After stopping the contraceptive pill, she’d found the problem worsened considerably, which was causing her a lot of distress and a lack of confidence.

“I knew Stephanie would be an excellent candidate,” says Christina, “so after taking a full history, we set about planning the programme using the most appropriate products that would turn her skin, and her confidence, around.”

What is Acne?

By understanding the root causes of any condition the Medico Beauty treatment method is far more successful at targeting and, in time, successfully solving the issue.

The cause of Acne is often blamed on a range of factors including oiliness, bacteria, poor nutrition and hormones. It’s especially prevalent during puberty, when a surge in hormone production has a direct effect on increasing the level of sebum made in the sebaceous glands. This causes the skin’s PH balance to alter, increasing the population of bacteria that makes it more likely for the complexion to be overloaded by toxins and become congested.

However, we also have to ask why variations in skin function, health and diet cause some people to experience sore pus-filled blemishes, and not others? This begs the question – is Acne a condition that is simply inherited and therefore inevitable, no matter how good someone’s food and lifestyle choices?

Seeing a teenager with Acne is a regular occurrence for GPs and beauty professionals, but at Medico, we understand that every person is unique and so are the reasons for their Acne. We don’t just prescribe a blanket treatment – instead, we make it our business to uncover why a succession of blemishes keep appearing, when it’s no longer just a case of having the odd breakout.

The skin is very forgiving, but like any organ, when things go wrong it has to let us know. The Acne ‘red alert’ is the skin’s way of doing this. Our approach is to regard Acne as a sign that our client is experiencing an imbalance somewhere – maybe coupled with poor immunity and a lack of healing.  The system is overloaded by stress that sends the skin out of balance, and can eventually lead to it remaining stuck in a repetitive cycle of breakouts.

We help our clients set a realistic goal to combat this, coming up with creative solutions to allow the body to re-programme and function better, taking everyone back to optimum wellbeing and a better looking complexion that reflects internal balance.

Why does the skin get so red with acne?

When a body undergoes extreme changes, the skin will mirror what is happening internally. If the liver is overwhelmed by toxins, the excess is transported to the skin in an attempt to detoxify via the many thousands of pores – resulting in visible signs such as rashes, lumps, bumps, scars or dryness. It makes sense then to protect the liver with the correct balance of vitamins and minerals, also increasing elimination through good digestive health which can assist with banishing a number of other symptoms such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and food sensitivities.  The principles used as the basis for restoring healthy digestion are exactly the same as the ones required for successfully treating the root causes of Acne. In essence we are what we eat.  When good digestive health is combined with using an effective topical homecare plan the results from treatment will be supercharged!

At Medico, we like to think ‘outside the box’, preferring to use our expertise to explore the internal relationships that lead to a breakdown in healthy body functions.

The objective from our treatment is to give the skin and body a chance to heal.  This is the reason why the Medico Method completely avoids antibiotics to treat the ‘infection’ – instead relying on boosting the body’s immunity, and detoxifying thoroughly. A period of time is spent making small switched to better alternatives that together can ultimately reduces the toxic overload. The process takes into account every system in the body including Circulatory (blood), Nervous (sensory), Endocrine (hormone), the Glandular system and those that detoxify; Respiratory, Digestive and Excretory system.

Hormones involved in acne

Hormones are a product of the Endocrine system. They interact with all other key body systems.

A network of glands make different hormones that rise and fall throughout our monthly cycle. Hormones provide signals to cells, turning on physical and mental changes. As a result, we metabolise, grow and move through the different phases of life, from infancy to old age.

Some hormones are used immediately, others are stored later for use. It’s a similar process to how the body metabolises carbohydrates into glucose for energy. The conversion is broken down into a process that can either be completed very quickly or more slowly.

Possible factors in acne

Several factors can affect hormone levels, sometimes adversely. Sometimes the use of the contraceptive pill can be to blame – it can take many months to re-establish hormone balance after discontinuing.   We know that Acne patients are more sensitive to the male hormone Testosterone and the same amount in their system will set off a higher production of sebum.

Other theories link acne to over-consumption of dairy products because mild taken from pregnant cows will contain a higher level of Progesterone and other hormones, when ingested can cause for the skin to become oilier and stimulate an overproduction of skin cells a condition called, “hyperkaeratosis.”  These two factors cause for the population of Priopionibacterium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propionibacterium_acnes) known as P. Bacteria to thrive and makes it more likely for infections to occur.

We know compounded stress happens to everyone and the results from other factors such as the external environmental pollution that overwhelms the ability to detoxify and leads to a weakness in other body system, in particular Hypothyroidism and adrenal gland inflammation, further stifles the immunity and ability to fight infection and heal.

You may believe having Acne is a curse but for many sufferers it’s the beginning of a recovery. It’s the ‘red flag’ that highlights changes are needed, and here at Medico, we can help you isolate those factors and get on the road to the healthy, vibrant complexion you deserve.

Christina decided on the 21 Day Skin Challenge. This is an ongoing campaign run by Saks. It provides a money back guarantee to the client. If they are unhappy with any aspect of the service. It demonstrates the belief the company has in the effectiveness of using CosMedix. Which forms part of Advanced Beauty service offering.

The recommended programme consisted of three treatments including two peels and a Luna Fusion Signature Medi Facial . In this instance because the client has a nut allergy Christina chose the Blueberry Jessner Peel. Typically we advise to avoid using treatments and homecare that contains L-Mandelic (derived from Almonds) if the persons has a nut allergy. A 21 day homecare kit was also provided which included the following products

Cosmedix Purity Clean  – A concentrated, exfoliating cleanser infused with cooling peppermint essential oil, calming lavender and clarifying tea tree oil.

Cosmedix Clarity Serum – This unique serum works by reducing sebum and encourages healthy cell proliferation that can otherwise lead to a blockage forming

Cosmedix Refine – Refine restores life to environmentally damaged skin to reduce signs of premature aging and improve skin texture and tone.

Mineral Makeup

Apart from topical treatments (those applied directly to the skin), the additional advice offered was:

Drink 2 – 3 litres of water per day

Drink green tea rather than caffeinated normal tea

Eat more fish

Eat 3 meals a day and follow a low GI eating Plan to balance blood sugar levels

Stephanie’s feedback:

“After every treatment my skin felt cleaner, softer and revived. It’s made a huge difference to my life. I’ve much more confidence now. I’m not scared or worried any more as I have it under control! I’ve recommended CosMedix products to loads of friends.”

Christina Feedback

I conducted the consultation with Stephanie and knew immediately the right course of action. I have been using CosMedix treatments for over 5 years and know that they get real results and work with ay skin type. It is also very important to look at diet, sleep, makeup and exercise in addition to any treatments as good skin starts within. Over a period of three weeks I carried out a short treatment series. Kick starting the programme with a Medi Facial, followed the next week by a Blueberry Jessner Peel and then finally in the last week by a third and final Blueberry Jessner Peel. Stephanie continued to pop in for quick check ups and has remained on homecare until final after photographs were taken.

Medico Feedback

We want to say a big thank you to Christina for achieving the incredible results we know are possible with the right products, advice and training. Thank you to Stephanie for allowing us to use these images as a case study and congratulations for helping to inspire everyone to make the small switches that results in massive improvements.
