Sobia was becoming increasingly concerned about the dark patches of skin developing on both sides of her face. She felt they were becoming more and more pronounced so she decided to do some research on the problem. Like many of us would Sobia firstly consulted her GP but they were unable to help her. She then turned to the high street and tried some general branded products which unfortunately only offered empty promises. Luckily, she then came across CosMedix and skin clinician Cristina at La Belle Forme clinic who was able to offer some helpful advice and support.
During the initial consultation, Cristina explained that Sobia’s skin problem was actually Melasma – a common complaint among women, which causes brown to greyish patches on the skin. Cristina put together a schedule of CosMedix products and treatments which would reduce the appearance of the dark patches on her skin and hopefully give Sobia back her confidence.

What is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin disorder that results in blotchy, brownish facial pigmentation. Although it is not going to cause any serious physical health issues it can lead to considerable embarrassment and distress for sufferers such as Sobia. It is much more common in women than in men and generally starts between the age of 20 and 40 – this is mainly due to the influence of hormones.
The pigmentation itself is due to an overproduction of melanin by the pigment cells, melanocytes. The actual causes can be quite complex and there may be many different reasons for the onset of Melasma on Sobia’s skin. The main reasons could be as follows:
- Hormone treatments – oral contraceptive pills which contain oestrogen and/or progesterone, hormone replacement and intrauterine devices are causing factors in about a quarter of affected women.
- Pregnancy – however, the pigmentation usually fades a few months after the birth.
- Hypothyroidism – low levels of circulating thyroid hormone
- Sun Damage – the most common cause and fortunately the most avoidable.
- Other medications – some therapies for cancer and even general toiletry products can lead to the onset of Melasma.
It typically appears on the upper cheeks, upper lip, forehead and chin especially when it’s resulting from sun exposure as these are the most exposed areas on the face. People with olive or darker skin such Sobia are unfortunately particularly prone to Melasma. There are essentially three types of Melasma – Epidermal which is a treatable form on the upper layers of the skin. Dermal – which is much tougher to treat as it is formed in the deeper layers of your skin and then some people may have a mix of the two.
Skin affected by Melasma darkens more than the surrounding skin with exposure to sunlight, so sun-avoidance and sun protection are key to helping Sobia’s skin. Year round sun protection is important even in the Winter months. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least factor 30, apply at least 15 minutes prior to going outside and reapply every 2 hours where possible. Once identified and treated by a dermatologist many people with Melasma will experience positive results. It may take a few months of treatment to see an improvement as Melasma can be stubborn but carefully following the advice given ensures the best outcome. Visiting a professional is important as it helps avoid skin irritations and other possible side effects.
Cristina felt the best way to help Sobia was to get her started on the Cosmedix products first as this would prepare her skin for the treatments she had lined up. First up CosMedix Eye Genius Brilliant Eye Complex – this is a clinically advanced eye cream which firms, brightens, calms and hydrates all in one. It features several natural based super ingredients including five firming peptides, sodium hyaluronate, borago oil and per fluorocarbons. The addition of the light-reflective mica will also give Sobia’s skin an instant boost of brightness. You can buy Eye Genius by clicking the image below.
Next up, CosMedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser which has the capability of penetrating deep into Sobia’s skin removing cellular debris and decongesting pores. This amazing cleanser contains shea butter which hydrates and softens the skin, lactic acid which renews and resurfaces, and peppermint to rejuvenate leaving Sobia’s skin healthy and glowing. Lastly Cristina recommended CosMedix Clarity Blemish Fighting Serum which is formulated with salicylic acid to eliminate dirt and oil which may be clogged deep within pores. This serum also contains aloe vera and tea tree oil to reduce redness and is loaded with retinol which brings fresh skin cells to the surface restoring a calm and clear complexion.
Once Sobia was into her new skincare routine Cristina was then ready to start the Cosmedix treatments. She chose to apply a CosMedix Timeless Peel to Sobia’s skin as it contains powerful ingredients designed to dramatically reduce signs of aging and pigmentation. Timeless is a highly concentrated deep face peel formulated with L-Lactic Acid and L-Retinol AGP which helps gently exfoliate skin, stimulate cell turnover and resurface without causing irritation. The results were so impressive Cristina used CosMedix Timeless Peel twice more. However, on the third treatment she mixed Timeless with CosMedix Blueberry Jessner Peel. This is a potent peel that eliminates impurities, reduces visible blemishes and lifts away stubborn pigmentation.
Feedback – Sobia
Sobia loved the end results and felt her confidence has been restored. She would recommend CosMedix treatments and products to all her friends and family. The proof of how good the results are, she says, are visible on her face. Not only has she continued with the new skincare routine but took to heart the extra advice Cristina gave – to cut down on fatty foods and increase her water intake. Sobia’s favourite product was CosMedix Clarity Blemish Fighting Serum due to the amazing impact it had on the problem areas on her skin.
Feedback – Cristina
Cristina has been working with CosMedix products for over three years and had confidence in their ingredients when advising Sobia. She immediately knew the problem areas were Melasma and has seen the fantastic results CosMedix has had with other women. Cristina strongly believes you are what you eat and advises her clients on ways sometimes even small changes to their diets can have a big impact their skin. Cristina’s best piece of advice – SPF is not just for summer, so get your sunscreen ready, rain or shine.
